The Science of Sound
Understanding the science behind sound can enhance your appreciation for music. Here are a few key concepts:
Frequency
Frequency refers to the number of vibrations per second. It determines the pitch of a sound. High-frequency sounds are perceived as high-pitched, while low-frequency sounds are perceived as low-pitched.
Wavelength
Wavelength is the distance between two corresponding points on a wave. It is inversely proportional to frequency. Shorter wavelengths correspond to higher frequencies, while longer wavelengths correspond to lower frequencies.
Amplitude
Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a wave from its rest position. It determines the loudness of a sound. A larger amplitude corresponds to a louder sound.
Overtones and Harmonics
Overtones are additional frequencies that are whole number multiples of the fundamental frequency. Harmonics are the first few overtones above the fundamental frequency. They contribute to the unique timbre of an instrument.
